Wound Prevention
Taking steps to try to prevent chronic wounds from occurring is important, especially if you have had such a wound before. Here are some steps you can take to try to prevent leg ulcers:
- Wear gradient compression stockings all day to encourage blood flow back to the heart.
- Exercise regularly – develop a plan with your physician.
- Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight.
- Avoid long periods of sitting or standing that can prevent blood flow back to the heart.
- Don’t smoke.
- Take care of your skin by washing legs and feet daily with mild soap and warm water.
- Wear appropriate footwear with cotton socks and sturdy, comfortable shoes that fit properly.
Also, inspect your legs and feet regularly for signs of swelling, discoloration, dryness, bruises or sores and talk to your doctor immediately if you see any changes.
Diabetic Foot Ulcer Prevention
- Control your diabetes. Follow any diet and medication plan developed by your physician.
- Inspect your feet and toes daily for cuts, blisters, bruises, red spots, sores, swelling or other changes.
- Wash your feet daily using a mild soap and lukewarm water, always drying carefully, especially between the toes.
- Always wear shoes or slippers, especially outside where there is the possibility of cuts and other injuries.
- Wear thick, soft socks.
- Check shoes before wearing for hard objects that could rub.
- Never wear high heels, sandals or shoes with pointed toes because of the pressure on parts of the feet and possibility of injury.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Don’t smoke.
- Exercise regularly – develop a plan with your physician.
- Have feet professionally measured and shoes fitted every time you buy shoes.
- See your physician for treatment of all calluses, corns or warts or any other toe or nail issues.
