Sleep Study Program

Our Children's House at Baylor offers inpatient and outpatient Sleep Study programs for children younger than 18 who have trouble getting restful, adequate sleep due to a respiratory obstruction.

The study helps determine if children have obstructive or central apnea, or upper airway resistance. A team of pediatric and respiratory specialists, led by Kelvin Panesar, M.D., help guide the study.

We take special careto ensure that the outpatient Sleep Study program is kid-friendly. A child arrives for the study in the early evening and typically leaves early the next morning. We try to similate the child's normal bedtime routine. We encourage parents to stay with the child during the study. Our respiratory therapists and nurses provide care as necessary during the night.

During the Study
If your child becomes anxious before the study begins, a respiratory therapist or a nurse will help your son or daughter understand what will take place. Using medical play and other techniques, our specially trained staff will make your child feel comfortable and reduce his or her stress. During the study itself, we use external devices to observer your child via monitoring equipment; there are no internal or invasive devices. The advanced equipment monitors how your child breathes during sleep and helps determine if your child has apnea.
