Baylor Specialty Hospital Acute Stroke and Neuromuscular Program

Patients who have had a neurological incident, injury or condition such as a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or others may require intensive nursing care and frequent physician monitoring to improve. The Baylor Specialty Hospital Acute Stroke/Neuromuscular Program offers the extensive physical, occupational and speech therapies to help maximize your quality of life and reach independence.

The Acute Stroke/Neuromuscular Program Baylor Specialty Hospital offers treatment by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Therapy can include physical therapy to improve motor skills, occupational therapy to improve self-care skills and speech language pathology to improve communication and thinking skills and evaluate the patient's ability to swallow. Therapy can include individual and group activities. The treatment team will evaluate you and develop an individualized plan of care based on your needs.

Treatment focuses on:

  • Use of assistive devices or other techniques
  • Extensive education and training for the patient and family
  • Pastoral care and counseling
  • Nutritional support
  • Intravenous medications, including anti-infection, coricosteriods, muscle relaxants, immunosuppressants, anticoagulants
  • Speech therapy
  • VitalStim Therapy - the only neuromuscular electrical stimulation technology cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to restore the swallowing function to patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia
