The Rules of Two®
Rules of Two® was developed by The Baylor Lung Center to help clinicians and their patients understand the practical implications of good asthma control. This program has become a national standard for assessing the effectiveness of medication prescribed for asthma.

Camp Airways
The Baylor Lung Care Center hosts Camp Airways, a free one-day asthma camp for children scheduled during school holidays and breaks, at least five times per year. Children with asthma between the ages of 8 and 12 are invited to attend. Activities include a field trip, lunch, asthma education, games, and an awards ceremony. The staff includes our Respiratory Care Specialists supplemented by trained volunteers. Please call 1-800-4BAYLOR for more information.

Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS)
Baylor is one of two hospitals in the entire north central Texas area that is approved by Medicare to perform LVRS, a surgical treatment for people with severe emphysema that has been shown to improve lung function, exercise tolerance, quality of life, and in some circumstances, even survival. Evaluation for LVRS includes a full pulmonary assessment, and involves radiology, cardiology, and thoracic surgery consultation.

Better Breathing Club
Better Breathing Club meetings for patients with lung disease are held at the Martha Foster Lung Care. For information contact Cheri Duncan at (214) 820-9792 or find more information on our calendar.

Outpatient Consultation
Evaluation and management by our staff of Board-certified physicians in either pulmonary disease or allergy and immunology is available by appointment. While prior communication with a referring health care provider may be helpful in relaying complex details of a medical history, a formal referral is not required for patients to access Center services. Consultation includes an extensive pre-visit medical information questionnaire, assessment by a Respiratory Care Specialist, and a formal consultation by a Baylor Lung Care Center physician. Follow-up visits with either the Respiratory Care Specialist or Center physician are arranged as needed.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program is designed to improve quality of life through an outpatient program of exercise training and education. Medications and breathing treatments may not completely eliminate respiration symptoms, but pulmonary rehabilitation allows each person to improve endurance and more fully participate in daily living skills such as housekeeping, or shopping and enjoy the freedom of walking and recreation. The Respiratory Care Specialists, working in partnership with physicial therapy, occupational therapy and social work provide the patient a comprehensive approach to shortness of breath. Participants learn about body structure, lung function, medication, infection control, and respiratory and exercise equipment use. The program runs for three hours a day, three days a week for six to eight weeks. During warmer weather, the exercise portion of pulmonary rehabilitation takes place in an indoor temperature controlled shallow pool. Patients do not require a physician referra to make an appointment for this outpatient program.

Diagnostic Testing
The Baylor Lung Care Center provides diagnostic testing to help understand the root cause of respiratory complaints, and evaluate response to therapy. Simple and complex pulmonary function testing is available, when appropriate. Dry-air challenge for exercise induced asthma, or simple bronchoprovocation for asthma may be performed. Chest radiographs are performed on-site as well. Skin prick and/or intradermal allergy testing may be used, if needed to assess the impact of allergy on presenting symptoms. Fiber-optic laryngoscopy may assist in the evaluation of vocal cord complaints or persistent hoarseness. When the diagnosis or treatment requires more than the Lung Centers expertise such as requiring surgery or transplantation services we serve as your advocate in arranging these services.
