Are snoring and headaches related?
Details of research published in Neurology suggests the answer may be yes. One of the most common and annoying sleep conditions disrupting millions of lives on a regular basis is snoring. Researchers believe affects from this nighttime nuisance may linger into the daytime - in the form of headaches.
What researchers discovered after examining more than 200 people was folks who experienced chronic headaches were more than twice as likely to also be chronic snorers than people who only suffered with occasional headaches.
According to Henry Raroque, M.D., a physician on the medical staff at Baylor, "This is significant precisely because there are certain things that occur in patients who have headaches that may lead to more problems in terms of the patient's overall well being not only from a quality of life issue but from a medical stand point."
Researchers are continuing work in this area to try and figure out which came first, the snoring or the headaches. We know how to treat both and first treat the snoring.
"If it's snoring alone, options may include the use of devices we call oral appliances which helps open up the airway where the noise really comes from. Second there are oral surgical procedures that may help," says Henry Raroque, M.D.
