Tumors Around the Base of the Skull

Tumors located around the base of the skull have always been challenging to diagnose and treat. About 40 years ago, 30 percent of patients with acoustic tumors died within one month, compared to one percent today. The change is due to a new team approach to surgery.

"Areas around the base of the skull, like the temporal bone, the clavis, and the sinuses are difficult when tumors are involved," said Fred Owens, M.D., a neuroradiologist at Baylor. "But with a team approach, we can assemble the right doctors, access the technology, and treat the problem more effectively."

Baylor's Skull-Base Team, started more than five years ago, sees over 100 patients a year. The team typically involves neurotologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists, and others.
